Become a volunteer

We can’t save Scotland’s red squirrels without the hard work and dedication of our volunteers.

Volunteering with Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels is a fantastic way to connect with nature and support your local area’s special native wildlife. You don’t have to be an expert to join in, and all our volunteers are provided with the training and resources they need to participate.

Find out more about available volunteering roles in your area by contacting us or checking the vacancies on the Scottish Wildlife Trust website.

To become a Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels volunteer, you’ll need to provide us with a few personal details so we can discuss opportunities with you. You can do this online by joining this general volunteering group.

Please note that that majority of our volunteering opportunities are within project priority areas (parts of Aberdeenshire, Argyll, the Trossachs, Stirlingshire, Tayside). In the south of Scotland (Dumfries & Galloway and the Scottish Borders) volunteering is mainly carried out via our network of volunteer groups, many of whom are now operating independently of SSRS. They are always welcoming new volunteers and you can find out if there’s one near you by visiting our network directory.  If in doubt you can contact us first to discuss, or check out the vacancies page on the Scottish Wildlife Trust website.

As lead partner, the Scottish Wildlife Trust is the employer of all Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels staff, and manages the project’s registered volunteers. Once you have been provisionally accepted onto a role, we’ll arrange a face to face meeting where we will ask you for a few more details so that the Trust can honour its duty of care.

Already a volunteer?

If you are already a registered SSRS volunteer and you used the same email address to join the Hub, your volunteering details will have been matched when you activated your registration. Please visit your Hub profile to check that our information is correct.

You can start accessing additional volunteer features on the Hub by joining this volunteering group. If you are a survey or grey squirrel control volunteer, the SSRS team will then add you to your specific volunteering group, enabling you to submit and/or view data.

If you are a member of an independent volunteer group in the south of Scotland you can start to access additional features by joining your Hub group.
