Welcome to the Nithsdale Regional Network Group

The Nithsdale Red Squirrel Group (NRSG) was expanded in 2025, having previously been divided into the Lower Nithsdale and Mid Nithsdale groups, each formed in 2018. The group’s area takes in the Nith Valley and includes the towns of Dumfries in the South and Thornhill to the North.

Red squirrels can still be found in this area but they are coming under increasing threat from non-native grey squirrels that are spreading in both rural and urban areas. The invasive grey squirrel outcompetes the native red squirrel, and some also carry the squirrelpox virus, which is deadly to red squirrels.

The NRSG aims to remove as many grey squirrels as possible and therefore reduce the threat of squirrelpox virus and promote the conservation and enjoyment of red squirrels throughout the Nith Valley.

The group is always happy to welcome new volunteers and has a range of roles to suit different abilities, availabilities, and interests. For more information about the group, or to find out how you can get involved please contact the Nithsdale Group Co-ordinator, Andrew Middleton at andrewmiddleton@mail.com.
