Welcome to the Clackmannanshire Regional Network Group

Nestled between the Ochil Hills and the River Forth, Clackmannanshire is home to a rich mosaic of woodlands that still shelter the native red squirrel.

These elusive animals can be found from Gartmorn Dam to Alva, Menstrie, and Dollar Glen, but they face increasing challenges from the spread of grey squirrels and habitat change.

The Clackmannanshire Red Squirrel Group was formed in 2025 as part of the Eastern Lowlands Red Squirrel Group (ELRSG) network. We are a voluntary community group working alongside local organisations, estates, and landowners to conserve red squirrels through population monitoring, grey squirrel management, habitat improvement, and public engagement. Our goal is to ensure red squirrels remain part of Clackmannanshire’s natural heritage for generations to come.

Where to Go Red Squirrel Spotting

Red squirrels can often be seen in the woodlands along the base of the Ochil Hills, especially near Alva Glen, Menstrie Glen, and Tillicoultry Glen.

Gartmorn Dam Country Park, Alva Woodland Park, and estate woodlands around Dollar also offer good opportunities to spot these charismatic animals.

Bring binoculars and look high into the canopy — reds are active early in the morning, feeding on cones, nuts, and seeds.

Help Us Protect Clackmannanshire’s Red Squirrels

Report Your Squirrel Sightings

Recording where red and grey squirrels are seen helps us understand distribution and target conservation action.

Get Involved in Monitoring

Adopt a transect and join our survey programme to record squirrel presence in your local woodland. You can share your route with a friend or partner — training and support are provided.

Volunteer for Events

We attend community and environmental events throughout the year. Helping on our stand is a great way to meet people and spread awareness about native wildlife.

Landowner Partnerships

If you manage woodland or have squirrels visiting your property, we can provide guidance on humane grey squirrel control and woodland management that supports native species.

Feeding and Grey Squirrel Control

Please do not feed grey squirrels, as this can increase their survival and spread disease to reds.

If your area supports only red squirrels, we can provide advice on how to feed them responsibly and safely.

We also welcome enquiries from landowners interested in joining our local control network, ensuring efforts are well-coordinated and effective across the region.

Join Us

The Clackmannanshire Red Squirrel Group welcomes new volunteers and members. Whether you’re keen on practical conservation, public engagement, or wildlife monitoring, your support will make a real difference.
