Organised by volunteers from the Red Squirrel Forum for South Scotland, this training day is open to volunteers who wish to learn more about the different ways they can get involved with squirrel monitoring in their local area.

PROGRAMME
9am: Registration and Coffee
9.30am: An introduction to the day
Outline of objectives for the day (reasons for surveying, the various methods, the use of feeders and the importance of keeping records). 10mins
9.40am: Survey and monitoring
SSRS Presentation – spring survey presence/absence 20 mins
10am: Workshops session 1 (outdoor) 2hr
The running of 2 outdoor workshops at the same time/divide into 2 groups (groups swap after 45mins);
- Walking transects, feeding signs and dreys
- Siting and monitoring feeders and hair tubes: pros and cons of both and when to use them
12.00: Lunch 30mins
12.30pm: Workshops session 2 (outdoor) 2hr
The running of 2 outdoor workshops at the same time (groups swap after 45mns);
- Using thermal imagers
- The siting & setting up of camera traps
2.30pm: Break Tea & Coffee
2.45pm: Bait/Good practice (inside everyone)
How to avoid cross contamination and the spread of the pox
3.00pm: Grey Squirrel detection and control and the links to Survey & Monitoring (inside everyone)
3.15pm: Choose last workshop (inside) 1hr
- Keeping records and Mapping
- Building feeder boxes and hair tubes
- Collecting hair samples and identification (using microscopes)
4.15pm: Round Up and Questions
